Holbox has been known for decades as just the small island eight miles off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, turning people away that think it is relatively difficult to get to. This off-the-beaten-path destination offers jade waters, empty beaches, people traveling by bicycle, and the occasional flamingo wondering by, as they too inhabit the island in the shallow lagoons. The island is almost entirely a nature preserve, where white sand replaces asphalt. Here you can swim with the largest fish in the world, the whale shark. Who can’t afford to relax and disconnect?
